Amalfi Coast Beach Guide: Positano, Ravello, and Beyond
Navigate the Amalfi Coast's dramatic cliffside beaches, from Positano's iconic shore to hidden swimming spots along one of the world's most beautiful coastlines.
By BeachLoco Editorial
The Amalfi Coast is the Mediterranean at its most theatrical. Pastel villages cling to near-vertical cliffs above a sea that seems almost artificially blue. Lemon groves cascade down terraced hillsides. The roads wind and switchback in ways that are simultaneously terrifying and beautiful. And the beaches — small, dramatic, often reached by steep staircases or boat — reward every step of the descent.
This isn't a coastline of endless sandy stretches. The Amalfi Coast is about intimate coves, clear swimming water, and the experience of having lunch at a cliffside restaurant before descending to a beach framed by some of the most dramatic scenery on Earth. It demands a different kind of beach travel — slower, more intentional, and deeply rewarding.
Who This Is Best For

Couples and honeymooners, luxury travelers, food and wine enthusiasts, and anyone who values setting over sand quantity. This is a coastline for experiences, not sunbathing marathons.
Positano & Its Beaches
Spiaggia Grande is the main beach — the one in every photograph, with colorful umbrellas against the cascading village backdrop. It's beautiful but crowded in summer. The real find is Fornillo Beach, a ten-minute walk west — smaller, quieter, with a more local atmosphere and better swimming. For something truly special, take a boat to the Li Galli islands or the hidden beach at Laurito, accessible only by water or a path from a cliffside restaurant.

Amalfi Town to Atrani
Amalfi Town's beach sits directly in front of the cathedral — swim, then explore the 9th-century Arab-Norman architecture. A five-minute walk through a tunnel leads to Atrani, the coast's smallest and most authentic village, with a tiny beach that feels worlds away from the tourist trail. The Amalfi coast connects naturally with a broader Italian beach itinerary — see our full Best Beaches in Italy guide for the wider picture.
Praiano, Conca dei Marini & Beyond
Praiano sits between Positano and Amalfi and has two excellent beaches: Marina di Praia (a small cove between cliffs, popular with divers) and Gavitella (west-facing, with the coast's best sunset). Conca dei Marini's Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Grotto) is a stunning sea cave. Maiori and Minori, further east, have the coast's longest beaches and a more relaxed, local Italian atmosphere — these are the spots where Neapolitans actually go on holiday.
Best Time to Visit

May–June and September–October are the windows. The coast is at its best in early June — warm enough for swimming, flowers in bloom, restaurants operating but not yet overwhelmed. July is hot and busy. August is intense — the combination of narrow roads, peak crowds, and Italian holiday season creates memorable traffic. The SITA bus along the coast road is an adventure in any season.
Where to Stay
Positano is the most scenic but most expensive. Praiano offers better value with excellent views and quieter beaches. Amalfi Town is centrally located with good ferry connections. Ravello, up on the ridge, has no beach but extraordinary views and cooler temperatures — it's the cultural complement to the coastal experience. Budget travelers should consider Maiori or Minori as bases. For a different kind of Mediterranean elegance, compare with the French Riviera's coastal towns.
Travel Tips
Do not rent a car unless you enjoy white-knuckle driving on single-lane cliff roads. The SITA bus and ferry network covers the entire coast. Ferries run Positano–Amalfi–Salerno and are the most pleasant way to travel. Book boat tours from Positano or Amalfi to access hidden beaches. Limoncello is made here — try it at the source. Restaurants with views charge a premium; restaurants one street back often have better food at half the price. The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) hiking trail between Praiano and Positano delivers the coast's most spectacular panorama.
