Taiwan Island Hopping — Planning Green Island, Orchid Island & Penghu
Plan your Taiwan island-hopping adventure with ferry routes, diving comparisons, and logistics for Green Island, Orchid Island, and Penghu. From world-class coral reefs to indigenous culture, discover Taiwan's best offshore islands.
By BeachLoco Editorial
While most visitors to Taiwan stick to Taipei and the west coast, the island nation's most extraordinary experiences lie offshore—volcanic islands with pristine coral reefs, indigenous cultures unchanged for centuries, and diving that rivals anywhere in Asia.
Taiwan's three major island groups—Green Island, Orchid Island, and Penghu—each offer completely different experiences. This guide focuses on choosing between them, getting there and around, how many days to spend, and how to sequence an island-hopping trip.
Editorial Moment: Soaking in Green Island's oceanside hot springs at midnight while bioluminescence sparkles in the breaking waves—that's when you understand why Taiwanese travelers guard these islands as secret treasures. They're not undiscovered, but they're absolutely undervisited by international tourists.

Green Island — Taiwan's Diving Paradise
Green Island (綠島) is Taiwan's most accessible offshore diving destination. Located just 33 kilometers off the east coast, this volcanic island offers world-class coral reefs, the famous saltwater hot springs, and enough infrastructure to make visiting straightforward.
Why Visit Green Island
- Zhaori Hot Springs: One of only three saltwater hot springs in the world. Soak in naturally heated seawater pools while waves crash meters away—magical at sunrise or under stars.
- Pristine Diving: Visibility often exceeds 30 meters. Healthy hard coral gardens, sea turtles, reef sharks, and abundant tropical fish.
- Easy Access: 50-minute ferry ride with multiple daily departures. The most beginner-friendly of Taiwan's offshore islands.
- Circumnavigation: Rent a scooter and circle the entire island (17 km) in a few hours, stopping at beaches, viewpoints, and the historic prison.
Diving on Green Island
Green Island is the most popular of the three for divers and snorkelers, with shore entries close to the harbor area. If diving is a major reason for your trip, see our Taiwan Diving Guide for dive sites, conditions, and seasons.
Getting to Green Island
By Ferry: Daily ferries depart from Fugang Harbor near Taitung. The journey takes approximately 50 minutes on high-speed ferries. Book tickets in advance during summer (June–August) and holidays—ferries sell out quickly.
By Plane: Daily Air Mandarin flights from Taitung Airport (15 minutes). The 19-seater planes offer spectacular views but book up fast. Useful when ferries cancel due to weather.
Ferry Cost: NT$920–1,000 round trip (approximately $30 USD)
Orchid Island — Indigenous Culture & Remote Beauty
Orchid Island (蘭嶼) is Taiwan's most culturally significant and remote inhabited island. Home to the Tao (Yami) indigenous people, this volcanic island offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Austronesian culture—carved wooden canoes, underground houses, and the famous flying fish season.
Why Visit Orchid Island
- Tao Indigenous Culture: The Tao people maintain traditions largely unchanged for centuries. Witness traditional boat-building, underground stone houses, and the flying fish harvest (March–June).
- Unspoiled Diving: Remote location means pristine reefs rarely visited by other divers. Strong currents bring pelagic life including hammerhead sharks.
- Flying Fish Season: March through June, the Tao harvest flying fish using traditional methods. The entire island revolves around this cultural and culinary event.
- Authentic Experience: No resort hotels, no convenience stores, limited cell service. This is real island life, not a tourist simulation.
Diving on Orchid Island
Orchid Island's remoteness keeps its reefs quiet, and it rewards experienced divers who are comfortable with more involved logistics. Our Taiwan Diving Guide covers its dive sites and conditions in detail.
⚠️ Cultural Respect on Orchid Island
- • Photography: Always ask permission before photographing people, boats, or traditional areas
- • Sacred sites: Some beaches and rock formations are sacred—respect posted signs
- • Flying fish: During season, don't touch or photograph fishing activities without permission
- • Dress code: Cover shoulders and knees when visiting villages
- • Traditional boats: Never touch or sit in tatala (carved boats) without explicit invitation
Getting to Orchid Island
By Ferry: Ferries depart Fugang Harbor near Taitung. The 2–2.5 hour crossing can be rough—motion sickness medication is strongly recommended. Ferries frequently cancel in poor weather, so build flexibility into your schedule.
By Plane: Daily Air Mandarin flights from Taitung Airport (25 minutes). Highly recommended for those prone to seasickness or with tight schedules. Book weeks in advance.
Ferry Cost: NT$1,100–1,200 round trip (approximately $36 USD)
Penghu — Archipelago Adventures
Penghu (澎湖) is Taiwan's largest island group—90 islands scattered across the Taiwan Strait between Taiwan and China. Unlike the east coast islands, Penghu offers sandy beaches, excellent windsurfing, traditional fishing villages, and enough variety for a week-long exploration.
Why Visit Penghu
- Beach Variety: From the famous double-heart stone weir to pristine sandy beaches on outer islands, Penghu delivers beach diversity the east coast islands can't match.
- Watersports Haven: Strong, consistent winds make Penghu Taiwan's windsurfing and kiteboarding capital. Calmer inner islands suit kayaking and SUP.
- Island Hopping: Ferries connect the main island to outer islands like Jibei, Qimei, and Wang'an—each with distinct character and attractions.
- Historic Villages: Traditional stone houses, ancient temples, and preserved fishing culture give Penghu a different atmosphere from the volcanic east coast islands.
- Fireworks Festival: April–June brings Taiwan's largest fireworks festival with weekly shows over Magong Harbor.
Snorkeling and Diving on Penghu
Penghu's calmer water and sandbars, especially around Jibei Island, make it a good choice for snorkelers and families. For dive-specific planning, see the Taiwan Diving Guide.
Getting to Penghu
By Plane (Recommended): Multiple daily flights from Taipei Songshan (50 min), Kaohsiung (30 min), and Taichung (40 min). Most convenient option with flights from NT$1,500–3,000 one way.
By Ferry:
- From Kaohsiung: 4 hours on regular ferry, or 1.5 hours on high-speed catamaran (summer only)
- From Chiayi (Budai Port): 1.5–2 hours, summer departures only
Note: There's no direct ferry connection between Penghu and the east coast islands (Green Island/Orchid Island). You must return to mainland Taiwan and take separate transportation.
Choosing Your Islands
Best for a First Offshore Trip
Green Island is the easiest introduction: a 50-minute ferry from Fugang Harbor near Taitung, a compact 17 km coastline you can circle by scooter, hot springs, and plenty to do on land if the sea is rough.
Best for Culture and Remoteness
Orchid Island is the choice for travelers who want indigenous Tao culture and a slower, more authentic pace, and who can accept limited services, limited cell coverage, and weather-dependent transport.
Best for Families and Variety
Penghu suits travelers who want several islands, beaches for non-swimmers, historic villages, and more dining and evening options, with frequent flights from mainland Taiwan.
Combining Islands
Green Island and Orchid Island pair naturally on an east coast trip from Taitung. Penghu sits off the west coast with no direct connection to the east coast islands, so visiting all three means returning to mainland Taiwan between them. Divers comparing reefs should use the dedicated Taiwan Diving Guide.
Ferry Routes & Logistics
East Coast Islands (Green Island & Orchid Island)
Both islands depart from Fugang Harbor, located about 10 minutes by taxi from Taitung Train Station.
⛴️ Fugang Harbor Ferry Schedule
| Green Island | 3–4 daily departures, 50 min, NT$920–1,000 RT |
| Orchid Island | 1–2 daily departures, 2–2.5 hrs, NT$1,100–1,200 RT |
| Green → Orchid | Limited direct service (check locally), typically via Fugang |
Penghu (West Coast)
Penghu is accessed from western Taiwan—Kaohsiung or Chiayi (Budai Port). There is no direct connection to the east coast islands.
✈️ Penghu Access Options
| Taipei → Penghu | 50 min flight, multiple daily, NT$1,800–3,500 |

Connecting the Islands
Green Island ↔ Orchid Island: Limited direct ferry service exists during peak summer season only. Most travelers return to Fugang Harbor and catch a separate ferry. Allow a full day for this connection.
East Coast ↔ Penghu: No direct connection. You must return to mainland Taiwan (train to Kaohsiung or fly to Taipei) then travel to Penghu separately. This typically requires an overnight on the mainland.

Adding Dive Days
If you plan to dive, add extra days on Green Island or Orchid Island and leave a buffer before flying. Dive-focused itineraries are covered in our Taiwan Diving Guide.
Best Time for Island Hopping
Optimal Window: April–May, September–October
These shoulder seasons offer the best combination of calm seas (reliable ferry service), warm water, good visibility, and fewer crowds.
Summer (June–August): Warmest water and longest days, but typhoon season means ferry cancellations are common. Build extra days into your itinerary.
Flying Fish Season (March–June): Essential for Orchid Island cultural experiences. The entire island revolves around the traditional flying fish harvest.
Winter (November–February): Rougher seas limit ferry service, especially to Orchid Island. Penghu's monsoon winds make diving difficult. Green Island remains accessible but cooler.
Combine with East Coast Road Trip
Island hopping pairs perfectly with the Taiwan East Coast Road Trip. Base yourself in Taitung for island excursions, then explore the coastal highway to Hualien with stops at Dulan for surfing and Qixingtan for sunrise views.
For beach lovers seeking sun and sand over diving, add Kenting at Taiwan's southern tip—accessible from Taitung via the scenic Southern Cross-Island Highway.
