Baytowne Marina at Sandestin — Destin Marina Guide

A full guide to Baytowne Marina on Choctawhatchee Bay: 210 slips, vessels to 125 feet, transient and Great Loop dockage, rentals, cruises, the Blue Marlin Classic and Sandestin resort access.

By BeachLoco Editorial Team

Most people arrive at Sandestin from the Gulf side, and never quite register that the resort's other shoreline is where its most interesting activity happens. Baytowne Marina sits on Choctawhatchee Bay, tucked in beside the Village of Baytowne Wharf, and it functions as something unusual on this coast: a genuine working marina — fuel dock, transient slips, charter boats, a fleet of rentals — that happens to be embedded in a full resort. You can dock a 100-foot vessel, walk two minutes to dinner, and put your family on a pontoon boat the next morning without moving a car.

That combination is the whole argument for Baytowne. It is the reason cruisers running the Great Loop stop here for a week instead of a night, why Destin families who own boats keep slips on this side of the bridge, and why the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic — one of the Gulf's serious offshore tournaments — uses these docks every June.

This guide explains what the marina actually is, what you can do from it, who it suits, and what to confirm before you arrive.

Why Baytowne Marina Is Different

Marinas on the Emerald Coast tend to specialize. HarborWalk Marina is built around Destin Harbor's charter-fishing and excursion trade. Legendary Marina is a boating base — dry storage, service, boat club. Baytowne is the one that pairs real marina infrastructure with a resort's worth of amenities, and it is the only one where a slip rental comes with beach access, pools, a fitness center and a tram that will carry you across the property.

Geographically it is also the calmest option. Choctawhatchee Bay is protected water. There is no running the pass in a chop to get home, no jockeying for position in a narrow harbor at 5 p.m. Boats come and go from a wide, sheltered basin, which matters if you are docking something large, if you are new to handling a boat, or if you are traveling with people who do not love rough water.

And the setting is deliberately social. The marina's docks run right up against the Village of Baytowne Wharf, so the space between "we just tied up" and "we are sitting down with a drink" is measured in steps. That works beautifully for some travelers and is exactly wrong for others — quiet-anchorage boaters should know that this is an active, family-heavy, event-driven environment for much of the year.

Dockage, Slips and Vessel Capacity

Baytowne Marina is a full-service, 210-slip marina accommodating vessels up to 125 feet. Dockage is available on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis, which gives it genuine flexibility — the same dock handles an overnight transient stop, a snowbird's winter berth and a year-round resident boat.

The detail that matters most to visiting boaters: ninety percent of the slips are open to the public and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Short-term dockage is welcomed rather than tolerated. At a lot of resort marinas, non-guest access is theoretical; here it is the operating model.

Capacity up to 125 feet also puts Baytowne in a small category locally. Large motor yachts that cannot be accommodated in shallower or tighter basins can come in here, which is part of why the marina draws the vessels it does during tournament weeks and holiday weekends.

The marina does not publish slip rates or live availability, and those change with season and vessel size — call ahead. During peak summer, holiday weekends and tournament week, assume the dock is busy and plan accordingly.

Transient Boating and the Great Loop

Baytowne is a natural stop for cruisers working along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, and the marina actively courts them: it runs a Looper Docking Special aimed at Great Loop boaters, alongside seasonal offers such as a football-season dockage special.

What makes it a good Loop stop is not the dock itself but everything attached to it. Cruisers need provisioning, laundry, a good meal, somewhere to stretch legs, and ideally a place where crew who are tired of the boat can find something to do. Sandestin supplies all of it within walking distance, and the tram covers the rest of the property. Boaters who intend to stay one night here routinely stay three.

Ask about current Looper terms when you book — special programs and their conditions change from season to season.

Fuel, Services and Clean Marina Status

The marina offers both unleaded and diesel fuel, with a total fuel capacity of 20,000 gallons. That is a meaningful number for a bay-side marina: it means larger vessels and busy summer weekends do not routinely drain the tanks.

Baytowne is a designated Clean Marina under Florida's Clean Marina Program, a voluntary state designation for facilities that adopt specific environmental practices around fueling, waste handling and stormwater. On a bay as heavily used as Choctawhatchee, that designation is worth noticing.

There is also a ship-store side to the operation aimed squarely at people going fishing: lures, hooks, poles and tackle basics are available at the marina, so a forgotten rig does not cost you a morning driving to a tackle shop.

For dockage and marina questions, the marina line is 850-267-7773 ext. 1.

Kayak Storage Rack

One genuinely useful and often-overlooked service: the marina rents space on a kayak storage rack, nightly, weekly or monthly, a few steps from the water. For anyone who brings their own kayak to the coast — snowbirds especially — it removes the daily hassle of hauling a boat to and from a condo. Availability is limited and first-come, first-served.

Slip Guest Amenities: What a Dock Rental Actually Includes

This is where Baytowne separates itself from a conventional marina. Guests renting a slip through Baytowne Marina receive access to resort amenities including:

  • Beach access and parking
  • Pool access
  • Two bikes for four hours
  • Fitness center access
  • One hour of kayak use
  • One hour of tennis court access
  • Complimentary tram service
  • Exclusive golf cart rentals

Read that list as a boater and the value is obvious. Beach access and parking alone solve the hardest logistical problem on this stretch of coast in July. A shower, a pool, a gym and a bike are the four things every cruiser wants after a long run. And the tram means the resort's scale — it is a large property — does not become a burden.

Amenity inclusions can vary by rental type and season, so confirm what applies to your specific booking.

Fishing from Baytowne Marina

Baytowne is not the charter-fishing epicenter that Destin Harbor is, and it does not pretend to be. What it offers is a quieter, less crowded departure point with light-tackle and inshore charters based at the docks, plus easy access to deep-sea charters for those who want to run offshore.

The distinction matters when you are choosing a trip. Bay and light-tackle fishing on Choctawhatchee Bay is calmer water, shorter runs, better for kids and for anyone unsure about seasickness, and it is productive year-round. Offshore trips out of the Destin area mean bigger water, longer days and different species. Neither is better; they are different days out.

If you are weighing options, our Destin fishing charters guide explains the trip types and what to ask a captain, and you can browse current Destin charter listings to compare boats. The resort also notes freshwater catch-and-release lakes on the property and surf fishing on the Gulf side — a useful fallback on days when the bay is blown out.

Pontoon Boats, WaveRunners and Watersports

For most visiting families, this is the reason to come to the marina at all: you do not need to own or charter anything to get on the water here.

Pontoon rentals

The marina's pontoon boats hold up to 12 passengers and rent by the half day (9 a.m.–1 p.m. or 1:30–5:30 p.m.) or the full day (9 a.m.–5 p.m.). Reservations are suggested, and for summer weekends they are effectively required. Two rules are worth knowing before you plan the day: renters drive themselves — no captain is provided — and while pontoons are permitted to run to Crab Island, they may not go into the Gulf of Mexico. For the vast majority of renters, Crab Island and the bay are the point anyway.

WaveRunners

Personal watercraft carrying up to two people are available at the marina on a first-come, first-served basis. They are the fastest way to see a lot of bay in a short time, and the least suitable option for a group that wants to talk to each other.

Paddleboards, kayaks and boogie boards

Paddleboarding and kayaking on the bay side is calm, scenic and genuinely pleasant early in the day. Guests who book their stay direct with Sandestin get one hour of free daily rentals on kayaks and boogie boards, first-come, first-served, available 9 a.m.–4 p.m. daily and weather permitting, from March through October.

Pricing varies by location for all watersports rentals; the resort's activities line is 850-267-7777. If it is clear water and reef you are after rather than bay paddling, the Gulf side is the better call — see our Destin snorkeling guide.

Cruises and Yacht Experiences

Several vessels operate from or near the marina, giving non-boaters a way onto the water that requires nothing more than a reservation. Note that these are independent operators, not owned or run by the resort.

SOLARIS is a custom-built 125-foot dining and entertainment yacht with three decks of indoor and outdoor space, docked at Sandestin. It runs dinner-and-dancing cruises weekly and year-round, and is also used for weddings and private events. It is the dressed-up evening option — dinner on the water rather than a boat ride with snacks.

Sol y Luna, a 54-foot luxury yacht, runs two very different trips: a 4.5-hour Crab Island cruise with a narrated eco-tour, complimentary floats and water toys (paddleboards available to rent, small coolers welcome), and a 1.5-hour narrated dolphin and sunset cruise through Choctawhatchee Bay with onboard restrooms and a Coast Guard–certified crew. The short dolphin cruise is the easiest possible on-water outing with kids or grandparents.

30a Luxury Yacht Charters handles the private end — sunset cruises, four- to eight-hour trips, multi-day charters and catered events for groups.

Schedules shift seasonally, and several of these operators add fireworks and holiday cruises. Check current sailing times directly with the operator.

The Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic at Baytowne Marina

Once a year, in June, the marina stops being a resort amenity and becomes a competition venue. The Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic is one of the Gulf Coast's major offshore billfish tournaments, and Baytowne Marina is its home dock.

Tournament week changes the character of the place completely. The fleet that arrives is not the bay-boat and pontoon crowd — these are large, purpose-built offshore sportfishing boats with towers and outriggers, many of them traveling in from around the Gulf, and simply walking the docks to look at them is an event in itself. They occupy the marina for days before the first fishing day while crews rig tackle, take on fuel and ice, and prepare for long runs into deep water.

The daily rhythm during the tournament is distinctive. The boats leave and the marina goes quiet, because the actual fishing happens dozens of miles offshore and there is nothing to see from land. Then, in the evening, the fleet comes back across the bay and the docks fill: scales ready, a crowd gathering, and a leaderboard that either changes or doesn't. Weigh-ins are the public spectacle, and blue marlin are large enough animals that the reaction when one is hoisted carries across the whole marina.

Around it, the Village of Baytowne Wharf does what it does — live music, food and drink, vendor activity, families spread across the waterfront. Spectators and competitors share the same space, which is unusual in big-money sportfishing and is a large part of the event's appeal.

If you are visiting during tournament week without a boat in it, plan accordingly: come in the evening for the weigh-ins rather than the middle of the day, arrive early if you want to stand near the scale, and expect the marina, the village and nearby accommodation to be busier than a normal June week. Our Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic event guide covers the dates, the fleet, how to follow live scoring while the boats are offshore, and what the tournament does and does not publish in advance.

If you are visiting because of the tournament and want a slip that week, book far ahead. Tournament weeks are the tightest dockage on the calendar.

Marina Bar & Grill

The marina has its own restaurant, and its usefulness is mostly about position: it is the place you eat when you have just come off a boat, or when you are waiting for one. Bay-side, casual, walkable from the docks, and equally workable for a crew still in fishing clothes or a family killing an hour before a cruise.

For anything more ambitious, the village and the wider resort supply a full range of dining — from casual waterfront to more formal rooms — and Destin proper is a short drive for harbor classics. Our Destin harbor dining coverage is the starting point for that side of the trip.

The Village of Baytowne Wharf

The village is effectively the marina's front yard: a pedestrian waterfront district of restaurants, bars, shops and entertainment built along the bay, with a year-round event calendar and a strong family orientation. Concerts, seasonal festivals, fireworks and kids' programming run through the season.

For a boater, this is unusual leverage. Most marinas leave you dependent on a car or a courtesy shuttle for dinner and errands. Here, the village is close enough that a slip effectively comes with a walkable town attached — which is the single most common reason cruisers name for extending a stay.

It is also the reason the marina area is loud and busy on summer evenings. Know which of those two facts matters more to you.

Resort Recreation Beyond the Water

Sandestin surrounds the marina, and the property's recreation runs well past boating: Gulf beach access, multiple pools, four golf courses, tennis and pickleball, a fitness center, bike paths and a spa. Slip guests get access to a specific set of these amenities, as listed above; broader club access and tee times operate under their own rules and fees.

This matters mainly for mixed groups. A family where one person wants to fish, another wants the beach and a third wants to play golf can put all three within a tram ride of the boat. That is a genuinely rare arrangement on the Emerald Coast, where marinas and resorts usually sit miles apart. For the beach side of the trip, see our guides to the best beaches in Destin and Destin resorts.

Who Baytowne Marina Is Best For

Transient boaters and Great Loop cruisers get the strongest value here — public first-come dockage, fuel, provisioning, a walkable village and a dedicated Looper program.

Owners of larger vessels have a local option that takes boats up to 125 feet in protected bay water, with daily through annual terms.

Families who do not own a boat can put together a full water day — pontoon, WaveRunners, paddleboards, a dolphin cruise — without a charter commitment.

Anglers who prefer calm water or are traveling with children will find bay and light-tackle fishing more workable than a long offshore run.

Mixed groups with differing interests are the marina's sweet spot, because the boat, the beach, the pools and the golf are all on one property.

It is less suited to boaters who want a quiet, low-traffic marina, and to anglers whose priority is the deepest possible offshore fishing schedule — Destin Harbor's charter fleet is more concentrated for that.

Practical Tips

  • Reserve pontoon boats ahead in summer. Half-day slots, particularly the 9 a.m.–1 p.m. window, go first.
  • Remember the pontoon rules: you drive, and Crab Island is fine but the Gulf is not.
  • Book direct with Sandestin if you want the free hour of kayak or boogie-board use, and go early — it is first-come, and seasonal (March through October).
  • If you are renting a slip, ask specifically which amenities are included with your booking type before you arrive.
  • Use the tram. The property is larger than it looks from the docks.
  • Avoid tournament week if you want a quiet marina — and target it if you want to see the fleet.
  • Book accommodation and dockage early for June, holiday weekends and any village event weekend.
  • Confirm cruise schedules directly with operators; SOLARIS, Sol y Luna and 30a Yacht Charters are independent businesses with their own calendars.
